Embracing the Unknown, Adios Home.

As the Texas sun was setting, we loaded our last load of stuff into the RV. Not that we are driving it anywhere, it is just a storage building at this point sitting in a storage facility. In the morning we are leaving for Georgia to hike the Appalachian Trail!

I sprained my ankle days before our departure and our plans have changed again. The original plan of flying to New York City and taking an Amtrak train to the trail and going north were scrapped and the decision was made to go to Springer Mountain in Georgia. Springer Mountain and nearby Amicalola Falls is the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Instead of doing a flip-flop thru-hike starting in New England we will start our hike in Georgia, go north, and then skip up to New England and then flip-flop back down south. That is an easy plan, said aloud.

We loaded up the car and left with excitement. A family of four and a dog Appalachian Trail bound. We made it to Caney lakes Recreation Area in Louisiana and setup camp at Beaver Dam Campground. It was an awesome campsite right on the lake. We setup our brand new Durston and Zpaks backpacker tents and made our beds for our first night in our final trail gear. It went well and we were setup by dark.

A quick trip to the restroom before bedtime we discovered a huge spider.

I started reading Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne to Oscar with a headlamp and off to sleep closing our first day.

Nighty night.
